The DUI Experience
The purpose of The DUI Experience is for students to safely be subjected to the feeling of driving under the influence and understand what it's like before they make the choice to drink and drive - or to choose to get into a vehicle with an impaired driver. Students relate to The DUI Experience unlike anything they'll ever learn in the classroom.

The program uses specially-manufactured goggles that simulate the effects of drinking 4 beers or smoking 1 joint of marijuana. With these goggles, students are asked to perform simple tasks, like catching a tennis ball and walking a straight line. Next students are escorted to the driver's seat of a go-kart and asked to maneuver around several orange cones on a short road course representing trees, pets and people.

Throughout the experience, students are videotaped. The video is made available for a follow-up session. When students see for themselves their inability to perform simple tasks, the students realize how "driving under the influence" could affect them.

"This program allows you to safely let teenagers who think they are invincible and able to beat any system, get behind the wheel of a vehicle, only to fail regardless of their best attempts. This innovative program should be a required program when teenagers take their drivers education program"
-State Senator Debbie Halvorson

"It would be wonderful if every teenager is given the opportunity to experience this program in a controlled environment where we know they are safe. Even if the teen has never consumed alcohol, has no intentions to do so, this experience will hopefully have enough impact to possibly keep a friend who has been drinking, from getting behind the wheel."
-Lisa Dugan, State Representative - 79th District

"By allowing teens to experience the simulated effects of being intoxicated while driving, I believe many more of our youth will chose to not put their lives and the lives of others at risk."
-State Senator Careen Gordon - 75th District

"Teenagers feel they are invincible, this program will help them to see that when drinking is involved, they aren't"
-Rick Selk, Youth for Christ

"This program is a great preventative measure in the battle against drinking and driving."
-Morgan Golden, Kankakee City Police Officer
